On July 26, 2024 I hiked the Little Moose Mountain and Little Moose Pond Hike. This is an excellent “warm up” hike for longer and more challenging hikes in the Greenville, ME area. The trailhead is up the Big Moose Mountain road just west of Greenville, ME.

Big Moose Pond and Little Moose Pond – Welcome
It was a cool, overcast day with about a 65 °F temperature. At the highest elevations of the hike (the southern most reaches in the Strava map above) we were in the clouds.
You depart the road and dive into the trail heading slightly downhill for about half a mile. When you reach the shores of Big Moose Pond, you’ll notice a few boats pulled up on the shore. When you come to the split in the trail to start the loop, turn right for a more gradual hike uphill. Turn right to take on the elevation directly in what will be a short but steep climb that will definitely increase your heartbeat.
I turned left. Over the next 1.5 miles or so you gradually increase your elevation after passing Little Moose Pond. The toughest part of the hike is when you turn right after Little Moose Pond. There is the occasional scramble between rock (nothing crazy, but it’s there). You are rewarded at the top by a pleasant walk through a pine forest before heading directly down from the highest point of the hike to the shores of Big Moose Pond.
Little Moose Mountain

This picture shows Little Moose Mountain, which is the mountain in the foreground of the picture. The hike is between the front the the second mountain back, to the right of peaks.
